This book was planned to close a gap in the library of integrated circuits. It explains the 555 timer and shows how to use it, either alone or with other solid-state devices. You will be told how to use the 555 timer and its counterpart, the 556 dual timer, in various specialized applications. The first three chapters explain the internal workings of the timer IC and how to connect if in monostable or astable multivibrator circuits. In Chapter 4, the 555 timer is used to form a square-wave generator, positive and negative power supplies, and as a battery charger/monitor. Then, the 555 timer is used in various testing-type circuits in Chapter 5.

Chapter 6 is devoted to fun and games with circuits designed to amuse while Chapter 7 becomes serious with circuits for your automobile and home. Alarm circuits, voltage regulator circuits, and electronic ignition circuits are discussed along with the home-type toxic gas alarm and weather monitor circuits. The next chapter allows you to build circuits that can be activated by your telephone. Chapter 9 has circuits for the hobbyist-a print timer, an exposure meter, a metronome, an electronic code keyer, and a radio transmission timer.

Finally, 17 simple experiments are given in Chapter 10 that will allow you to gain a basic practical knowledge in using the 555 timer.
